Unless you’ve been living under the proverbial rock, you must be well-acquainted with Korean pop music. The music of no other non-English-speaking country has been able to have the kind of impact on the world as K-pop. From one-off performances at (relatively) small-time events, South Korean pop-stars are dominating the Western market with full-fledged concert tours today. We’ve compiled a list of some of the biggest names in the genre that you must listen to at least once.

  • BTS: No K-pop list can start off with any other artist but BTS, who has been ruling charts and hearts since 2015. Since its first concert tour in 2015, the boy band has sold-out Wembley Stadium, made it to the Time 100 list and cemented its position as pop royalty. Must-hear: “Dynamite” & “DNA.”
  • BLACKPINK: This powerhouse of a girl band is one of the highest-charting Korean groups. It has shattered numerous records and amassed even more accolades since debuting in 2016. It made its American debut at an invite-only Grammy event and has graced the stage at festivals such as Coachella. Must-hear: “Kill This Love” & “How You Like That.”
  • TWICE: This all-girl group has attained international success since its debut in 2015. In addition to Korean albums, the group has also released Japanese records, while its concert tours across Asia and America have been huge successes. Must-hear: “CHEER UP” & “LIKEY.”
  • Stray Kids: This boy band’s brand of music is rich in its diversity of genres. Pulverizing raps, electronic drops and guitar riffs add another dimension to its music. This group has performed at concerts and events across the US, Germany, South Korea and Japan, to great acclaim and success. Must-hear: “Hellevator” & “MIROH.”
  • Red Velvet: As the name suggests, this girl group’s music explores its fierce ‘Red’ side as well as the softer ‘Velvet’ side. The result of this is the creation of catchy pop songs with unpredictable elements that add an edge to them. Must-hear: “Psycho” & “Ice Cream Cake.”

Other K-pop groups that have been making waves internationally are EXO, SEVENTEEN and IU, to name a few. Their personalities, choreographies and fantastic blend of genres have taken the popularity of K-pop to a whole new level.
