The FIBA Basketball World Cup — Basketball’s Crowning Achievement

After the end of a rigorous qualification process that lasts two years, 32 teams qualify for this championship. Previously restricted to amateurs only, the tournament has featured professional basketball players ever since the 1994 edition. This landmark change led to an increase in the quality of basketball being offered on display and it also skyrocketed its viewership ratings.

Just like other major sporting events across the world, the tournament has also witnessed many historic moments. The 2006 semi-final between Greece and the USA is one such iconic moment. Despite being favorites with a team that consisted of basketball legends such as LeBron James and Carmello Anthony, the Dream Team were beaten by a score of 101–95 by an underdog Greek team.

The 2010 World Cup Final between Turkey and the USA was also a nail-biting affair. Turkey as the hosts had a home advantage whereas the USA had the daunting task of playing in front of a very hostile crowd. Turkey were eventually beaten by the USA 81–64 with Kevin Durant as the leading scorer for the champions.

The next edition of the FIBA Basketball World Cup will be held in 2023 and will be hosted by Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan. The ever-increasing popularity of this sport coupled with the anticipation of a national honor makes this event a fascinating experience for basketball fans across the world.
